The conference will take place at the Royal Natural Science Institute (museum) of Belgium.

Participants will be welcomed in the museum’s main entrance hall.

A map of Brussels as well as one of Brussels’ public transport network (STIB) will be given to you when you enrol.

 

How to get to the museum

Beware of possible traffic congestion due to major roadwork for the new fast train system (RER) in the museum’s neighbourhood.  The work started in February 2009 and will last 19 months …

Access to the Museum by car is difficult and the number of parking spaces very limited.  We recommend that you use public transport.

Public Transport

The use of public transport is highly recommended due to the limited number of parking spaces in the Museum’s neighbourhood.

 

By train:

The train station “Bruxelles Luxembourg” is a five minute walk from the Museum

 

By Bus:

  • Buses numbers 34 and 80 stop just opposite and just below the Museum.  The stop is called “Museum”
  • Buses 21, 22, 27, 38, 54, 64 and 95 – descend at “Place du Luxembourg” – this is a five minute walk from the museum.
  • Museum bus (see website : Musée du Transport Urbain Bruxellois (Brussels Urban Transport Museum); this website will open in a new window).

 

Underground:

  • Lines 1, 5 Maelbeek (a 10 minute walk from the Museum).  You can also descend at the Art-Loi stop et change to lines 2 ou 6 (direction Elisath or “Roi Baudouin) until the “Trône” stop.
  • Lines 2 and 6 – descend at “Trône” (10 minutes walk to the Museum).  Alternatively, you could then catch a bus at the “Trône” stop, numbers 21, 22, 27, 38, 54, 64 or 95 and descend at “Place du Luxembourg”.

  • One ride (called JUMP) :       1.70 € bought prior to boarding
  • One ride (called JUMP) :        2.00 € bought in the vehicle
  • Five rides (JUMP) :               7.30 € only sold prior to boarding
  • Ten rides (JUMP) :                12.30 € only sold prior to boarding

 

One ticket allows you to travel throughout the STIB network, however many changes except for the NATO-Brussels Airport lines (12 and 21).  The ticket can also be used for the Brussels urban network operated by DE LIJN,.TEC and SNCB (for more ample information, please consult the network map).

Getting tickets stamped

Whichever means of transport used, you have to get your ticked stamped.  For busses and trams this is done at the front of the vehicle.  For the underground network as you enter the station.  A trip begins with the first stamp.  You are then entitled to make as many changes as you need within the entire network for an hour.  You must not forget to get your ticked stamped with each change of vehicle.

Underground trans run from 5.30am to 11.30pm.

Most busses run from 6am to 11.30pm.

On Fridays and Saturdays, some Noctis busses run from midnight to 2.30am.

There is a wide choice of accommodation in Brussels with varying prices.  Below is some information on hotels, B&B (bed and breakfast) and youth hostels.  We suggest you choose accommodation either in the centre of Brussels (postal code 1000) or in the European Commission neighbourhood (postal codes 1040 and 1050).Try to avoid the south and west of Brussels since access is more difficult.

At the Museum: the « Dino Café » which offers sandwiches, soup, hamburgers, quiches, …

At a short walk from the Museum which is located in the heart of the European Commission neighbourhood, you will find a wide variety of restaurants and snack bars:

  • Place du Luxembourg and immediate surroundings
  • Place Jourdan which incidentally boasts the best chips in Brussels (the booth on the square)

 

In the evening

Most of the restaurants around the Place Jourdan and the Place du Luxembourg are open in the evening.  There is also a wide choice of restaurants in downtown Brussels.
